Campsite Despeñaperros is a campsite with 112 touring pitches and 30 year round pitches. During low season, between 01-01-2018 - 24-03-2018, 02-04-2018 - 15-06-2018, 15-09-2018 - 22-12-2018 and 25-12-2018 - 29-12-2018, the nightly rate is €17,- at one of the 112 touring pitches at Campsite Despeñaperros in Santa Elena (Jaén).
Quiet wooded site conveniently located a short distance from the N IV/E5. Suitable for staying for some time to relax. Level grounds with sufficiently shaded pitches. The 'Batalla de Las Navas de Tolosa' museum in Sta Elena is most interesting. It shows a scene from a historical battle between the Christians and the Moors in 1212.

Such potential but it has still to be exploited.
We used this site as an overnight stopover on our journey from the Port of Bilbao to Southern Spain in January and on our return journey in February. Firstly it is not very easy to find as the town of Jaén is a maze of lanes. My SatNav encountered a \'dead-spot\' and so we took a wrong turning up a blind alley that involved backing my unit some 100 meters.
Having eventually found the Campsite extreme care has to be taken negotiating the entrance gate which is narrow and out of alignment with the entrance bollard. Refuse bins and parked vehicles hamper access to the entrance. The toilets are an \"experience\" with no toilet seats fitted to the pans. Better than that the lighting after dark is poorly set up as the lights are not sensor controlled and rocker switches need to be reset after the system has timed out.and has left you in complete darkness. Most of the showers had no spray nozzles fitted and when I tried to make use of the showering facility on the morning after there was no hot water. My wife reported similar lack of facilities in the Ladies.
I saw no evidence of any facilities for food and drink and it was not easy to decant water at the emplacement pitch without a suitable screwed adapter.
This campsite is not at the top of my list and I have to wonder why it is even included in the ACSI listing
The campsite is located close to the motorway but we didn\'t hear any noise from the road. The site itself has good large flat pitches, big enough for a 7m caravan, although you need to take the turning in to get to the campsite quite slowly as it is fairly tight, especially as when we visited they were doing repairs to the road. The shower and toilet facilities could do,with some money spending on them, but they were clean and there was plenty of hot water. If you are leaving the site to head north, check your sat nav (if you are using one) as ours took us a slightly bendy route to get back to the motorway.
We used this site as a stop over on the way south in January.
What a beautiful site would love to come in the summer, looks like there would be plenty to see and do.
The only little thing was the toilet block was not heated, bit cold in winter it was -5 when we were there. Having said that the showers were lovely with plenty hot water. Would use this site again and hopefully we get a chance to see it in the summer.
Arrived to be told no ACSI due to no computer but then printed us a receipt from the computer. No facilities as end of season. Toilets basic and showers unhygenic. OK for an overnight stop.
Easy enough to find. Level pitches under pine trees. Facilities were well maintained and there was plenty of hot water. Well stocked shop and a beautiful swimming pool surrounded by grass - but one needed to supply ones own chair! Good base, I would guess, for walkers of whom we saw plenty. Pleasant bar and restaurant.
We enjoyed this site. Very peaceful and very conveinent. On our way south in early June we were allocated a pitch but it suited us so that was fine on our return at end of June we were told to choose our own - out of discount season the reason perhaps?
Good price with discount but felt a bit steep with no pool or restaurant open.
We had an excellent meal at the hotel near the entrance can thoroughly recommend it.
Usefully placed just off the autoroute however the \"welcome\" was nonexistent. Trying to pay by card was declined. The facilities were barely ok - dated and due for a real clean. The surroundings are very nice indeed and there was no real noise from the autoroute. We\'d use it again as an overnighter but only because there is nothing else in the area.
It is a one night stop place really. The shanty town of static installations seems to fund the local team who were seen baiting traps for wildlife on site at 2330 on the same day that the ACSI inspectors were encamped opposite me!!!
The toilets are superficially clean but feaces in one corner of a shower certainly put me off the place. I will never return. Yuk!
Really nice location - not much info from staff and pitches allocated despite only a few over nighters staying - assume you could change if desired but no info given?
As early in season nothing open but being adjacent to National park walking good. Dog owners will need to be vigilant from March onwards any the wooded cover is pine and there are very many nests of Processionary caterpillars to be seen
