General information

Campsite Despeñaperros is a campsite with 112 touring pitches and 30 year round pitches. During low season, between 16-09-2020 - 23-12-2020, the nightly rate is €18,- at one of the 112 touring pitches at Campsite Despeñaperros in Santa Elena (Jaén).

Quiet wooded site conveniently located a short distance from the N IV/E5. Suitable for staying for some time to relax. Level grounds with sufficiently shaded pitches. The 'Batalla de Las Navas de Tolosa' museum in Sta Elena is most interesting. It shows a scene from a historical battle between the Christians and the Moors in 1212.

Nice site. Stopped for one night and the owner wanted cash!

Arrived at this site heading north. Please note do not follow the satnav when you reach the village and instead follow the signposts for \"camping\". We followed the satnav and ended up towing our caravan down a single track road for about 2 miles until we found a turning spot. The campsite is in a lovely setting surrounded by olive trees in the National Park. Found the receptionist/owner very pleasant and we managed with very limited Spanish but you do have to attempt some Spanish and the staff are more than happy to help. The entrance is quite tight through the archway, so line your unit up before driving through. We were allocated a pitch under a tree lined area which we found to be quite cold. The pitches on the edges of the site looking over the olive grove were bathed in sunshine and next time we will ask to move to another pitch. We spoke to a Dutch couple who were allocated a pitch in the same area as us but they just moved to the warmer pitch - it is perfectly acceptable to do this. We found the showers and toilets to be spotlessly clean. There are no toilet seats but this is only for hygiene reasons. The temp was -3C when we woke up, and although the shower blocks were cold, there was ample hot water so didn\'t have a problem there. Lovely walk /dog walk at the side of the site past the olive trees into the National Park. Took a stroll around the village in the morning which was really pretty and very well kept. There were local shops for bread and groceries, wine etc. When leaving the campsite to go north, turn right at the bottom of the campsite road and drive up through the gorge which is absolutely stunning. It is a very good wide road, and we had no problem with the van despite it being very twisty.
We hope to return to this site again later this year when we head south again.

It was filthy. The chemical disposal point was covered in excrement and not cleaned. No one would use it. The toilet block was old and dirty and not cleaned. The man in charge was unhelpful and refused to serve drinks in the bar even though it was open.

Good site both as stopover and to explore Park. Hot water in abundance; Staff as mentioned by others not customer focussed. Recommend Hotel Meson for meal. Cannot comment on pool or child friendliness but had to score!

Miserable man at reception; charged more for car with motorhome; not offered any WiFi or barrier card; had to ask to be let out; won’t use again.

Basic campsite and facilities but adequate for a stopover. Very quiet in June and we were able to pick a place with some shade and nice views over the countryside. The little village had a local bar which served food and there is a hotel with a good restuarant just outside the gates. Also a handy store where we could buy bread, wine and groceries.

Such potential but it has still to be exploited.
We used this site as an overnight stopover on our journey from the Port of Bilbao to Southern Spain in January and on our return journey in February. Firstly it is not very easy to find as the town of Jaén is a maze of lanes. My SatNav encountered a 'dead-spot' and so we took a wrong turning up a blind alley that involved backing my unit some 100 meters.
Having eventually found the Campsite extreme care has to be taken negotiating the entrance gate which is narrow and out of alignment with the entrance bollard. Refuse bins and parked vehicles hamper access to the entrance. The toilets are an "experience" with no toilet seats fitted to the pans. Better than that the lighting after dark is poorly set up as the lights are not sensor controlled and rocker switches need to be reset after the system has timed out.and has left you in complete darkness. Most of the showers had no spray nozzles fitted and when I tried to make use of the showering facility on the morning after there was no hot water. My wife reported similar lack of facilities in the Ladies.
I saw no evidence of any facilities for food and drink and it was not easy to decant water at the emplacement pitch without a suitable screwed adapter.
This campsite is not at the top of my list and I have to wonder why it is even included in the ACSI listing

Travelling party: Family with children, 4 – 12 years

The campsite is located close to the motorway but we didn't hear any noise from the road. The site itself has good large flat pitches, big enough for a 7m caravan, although you need to take the turning in to get to the campsite quite slowly as it is fairly tight, especially as when we visited they were doing repairs to the road. The shower and toilet facilities could do,with some money spending on them, but they were clean and there was plenty of hot water. If you are leaving the site to head north, check your sat nav (if you are using one) as ours took us a slightly bendy route to get back to the motorway.

We used this site as a stop over on the way south in January.
What a beautiful site would love to come in the summer, looks like there would be plenty to see and do.
The only little thing was the toilet block was not heated, bit cold in winter it was -5 when we were there. Having said that the showers were lovely with plenty hot water. Would use this site again and hopefully we get a chance to see it in the summer.
