Lovely campsite large pitches, short walk to centre of village bar and restaurant on site very knowledgable reception staff.
What a gem of a site! Delightful location alongside the river. Large level pitches with a choice of sun or shade. Plenty of hot water in the spotless showers. Nice covered pool Very good restaurant on site with very reasonable prices. Very helpful staff, nothing is too much trouble. A short walk into the beautiful old town (up some steep steps!) If you use the steps go straight on at the top and visit the “Hotel Splendid” it doesn’t look much from the outside but there is a lovely terrace out the back and the food is both cheap and good. The landlord shall we say “enjoys the pleasure of his cellars”! But he is a real hoot! After four of us had an evening meal he insisted on opening a bottle of bubbly and sharing it with us for free! (And it was pretty decent stuff!)
It’s an easy drive into Saumur and don’t miss Fontevraud Abbey Which is nearby.
Be VERY careful NOT to approach this site through the town, especially if towing! the streets are VERY narrow with many very tight bends. The site is well signposted so follow the signs. Approach from the ring road ONLY or you will either get (well and truly) stuck OR be faced with a “No caravans or Motorhomes” restriction due to some narrow and low ancient gateways! Don’t think you will be able to get through, you won’t.
visited again September 18. and just as pleasant as our last visit, this really is a very nice camp site with a half decent restarant attached
This is the sort of site that you arrive intending to stay a couple of nights then stay a week. The local town, easy walking distance, is beautiful and has everything you need. The on site restaurant is fantastic with high quality food and a superb menu. The swimming pool is excellent and has a retractable cover, toilets/sinks etc are always immaculate and it has showers that actually work.
So what are the drawbacks, well most of the pitches are small and don’t have hedges between them so you are very open (and close) to your neighbours. The night lighting is a harsh bright white and the water taps are few and far between. So it’s not perfect but it’s darn close - the staff speak perfect English and are really lovely and helpful. We will be back, it’s great.
Great site at a fair price. Stayed 3 nights in September on our way south. The site is very nice with good facilities and the setting next to the town is also very nice. No hesitation in recommending the site or returning in the future.
Ideal site for visiting Abbety Fontrevaud and Saumur. Very helpful staff who made you feel very welcome. Spacious pitches. Lovely heated pool. We didn’t eat at the restaurant but it was very popular with other campers. 5 minute walk to the where there was a supermarket, boulangerie plus several cafes and restaurants. A very historic village with a beautiful castle which overlooked the campsite. Do not forget anti-mosquito cream as the site is by the river! I would thoroughly recommend this site.
Excellent campsite in beautiful location. Sophie and Clement were delightful with Sophie speaking excellent English and arranging a vets visit. They were both smiling even though they closed for winter at the end of the week. Chateau was lovely to see and village was beautiful so would definitely recommend
This was a real gem. It is difficult to find in a motorhome so do read the directions carefully as you won't get through the town. The campsite is by a stream and it's very pretty and peaceful. The choice of bread for the morning and the food in the restaurant were fantastic. The local town was a lovely place to walk around, especially armed with a free map from reception.
Stayed at this lovely site for a second year...on virtually the same pitch down at the far end of the site by the river. It's a lovely place but on this years visit we were robbed of our camping chairs, left under the awning. Taken at lunchtime, when many campers were at the restaurant or like us, out for a walk. The staff were very helpful and consolatory, but the fact remains that a low wire fence next to a public footpath at the most remote part of the site means you are a potential target. We will stay there again but keep the chairs indoors when we go out for the day.
Stopped for 2 nights during April 2017. On arrival found a very friendly & helpful welcome from the 2 brothers who run the site. Parked up by the rivers edge taking advantage of the view. Had a meal in the restaurant which was excellent, so much so that we had another on the following evening, had a surprise as it seemed to be fully prebooked but were fitted in with no problem. Again meal was excellent. Village is old and very interesting. Great site for stop over or longer. Would happily revisit.
